Add its recently built metro system and airport into the mix, and you've got an old Athens with a sparkling new sheen. As EU-driven modernization and preparations for the 2004 Olympics propel the city forward, there's a refreshing note of optimism in the air. As EU-driven something of a European renaissance. Though its streets buzz with a unique and chaotic blend of east and west, the city once known as the 'Paris of the Mediterranean' is experiencing something of a European renaissance. It's an affable city enlivened by outdoor cafes, pedestrian streets, parks, gardens and characters aplenty. With thousands of years of history and mythology under its belt, Athens - named for the olive-tree-loving Athena (goddess of wisdom) - is more than a concrete jungle. All the rooms are air conditioned, have cable television, radio, coffee service, mode-fax, electronic safe, full mini bar, direct dial telephone, hair drier, magnifying mirror, newspaper of your choice, fresh flowers, and day and night maid service. Cherry wood doors with safety locks, and tapestry on the walls combine with velvet carpet to make you feel at home. The soft colors of the rooms make you feel at ease and relaxed. All in all a lovely hotel, run by a lovely family who care about their customers and give excellent service.Welcome to the Hotel Alexandros. Balcony overlooked the street with a view of the mountains, lovely little sun trap. It was very hot even in October but the air conditioner was an extra €7 a night so we didn’t bother. The double bed was small for a couple, but there were 2 other single beds in the room. Room very large, Paul referred to it as the penthouse, last room at the top. Jim was back on Monday for a gig and he was brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable evening - great singer with loads of patter and energy. We were joined by a lovely couple for the quiz night which was great fun, Jim Brown (host) is good and it was enjoyable but the raffle “play your cards right” went on too long and people were getting bored. Paul usually around to chat to guests and clear the trolley, lovely chap who makes you feel right at home. You could order a full English or bacon sandwiches at the pool bar after 10am though. Lots of lovely fresh fruit on offer which was great and hubby enjoyed the homemade Greek yoghurt too. Breakfast very underwhelming, quite boring - beans or scrambled eggs hot every day the same! No nice pastries, just cold tiny ones that tasted savoury possibly cheese - not nice. A poolside bar, a fitness center, and a snack bar/deli are other highlights at this upscale hotel. You can splash around at the seasonal outdoor pool, visit one of the 2 restaurants for a bite to eat, or unwind with a drink at the bar/lounge. Door to outside always open quite breezy and could be cool in dining room at times. Airotel Alexandros Hotel puts you 1.5 mi (2.4 km) from Syntagma Square and 2.2 mi (3.6 km) from Acropolis. Sat outside but very breezy and a bit chilly. Supermarket very reasonable, a bottle of local red wine for less than £5, great value and really good. Bought some coffee and tea from the supermarket so not really an issue. Cleaning daily is good, they just need to address the toilet brush issues and cover their hair as we found long dark hairs in the bathroom after cleaning - neither of us has long dark hair! Although kettle in the room tea and coffee only provided for the first day. Also toilet brush (one of my pet hates!) was dirty which is bad, no one wants to use a loo brush with other peoples toilet waste on it, either clean them or use cheap ones and give people a new one. Design is like a wet room but not great in relation to toilet position. Issue with hot water for the first couple of days - cold showers! Shower curtain awful - clings to you cold and wet, floor soaked so if you needed the toilet after someone had a shower you got wet feet/slippers (a squeegee would have been good to push the water to the drain). It’s wasn’t too bad but it would have been nice to know as we went along. No bill for drinks at dinner each night, so unable to tot up for total at end, personally I prefer to know what the end bill will be or pay as I go. Dinner first night - Red wine - very large glass very dry! But nice to try the local raki. I got my own special desserts too - that was a definite plus. Special starters and ensuring dishes without cheese etc were provided was extremely nice of them. Maria was very careful with my dairy intolerance which was much appreciated. I got bitten as we sat round the pool despite copious amounts of insect repellent! Only the once fortunately. Mosquitoes round the pool, also flies and wasps. Tuna sandwich was great as was the chicken wrap, but the gyros pitta was greasy especially the fries which I didn’t expect in it - the menu is very faded so hard to make out the prices too. ![]() Pool bar - nice snacks and reasonable prices too. Hotel a little tired needs updating, especially the bathrooms. ![]() Hotel Alexandros A little family run hotel, run by a lovely family. Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort.
